CASP, Circum-Arctic Sediment Provenance

The principal aims of CASP are to:

• Determine the age and metamorphic history of pre-Mesozoic Arctic terranes in order to establish provenance reference datums.

• Determine the sediment provenance of circum-Arctic Mesozoic successions using those reference datums.

• Incorporate all results into our Arctic database in order to facilitate regional synthesis and model development.

• Integrate these results to develop a unifying tectonic model for the evolution of the Amerasian Basin in particular, and of the Arctic terranes in general.

U-Pb dating of detrital zircons is our primary tool in these investigations. We use high resolution secondary ion-microprobe mass spectrometry (SIMS) or laser ablation-inductively coupled mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) to determine the provenance of Arctic sediments. The current phase of the project is funded for 3 years (2008-2011).
